Thirty-Second Meeting (10/16)

Hello everyone! Thanks for coming to the meeting [even if you didn't have the book(s) finished... :P] and thanks for the pizza Candie! Our next meeting won't be until January (date TBD) and our next book is I Am Pilgrim, the winner of our vote (it scored 4.0/5). We might also be reading A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, which is the collection of the three Dunk & Egg novellas that I mentioned in a previous post. If you would like a copy of either book courtesy of Chris Morris Shipping Inc., vote in this here poll. You have until Monday 11/2 to vote. I Am Pilgrim costs $7 and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms costs $20.

For this meeting we read both 100 Years of Solitude and The Little Prince, but many of us hadn't finished one or both books so I didn't take any notes. I hope you all get a chance to finish them!

Dunk and Egg

Hey Thronies - we're going back to our roots today! I got this email and I thought I would share it with you all. The Dunk and Egg novellas take place about 90 years before the events of A Song of Ice and Fire. Dunk is a hedge knight (who will eventually become Ser Duncan the Tall, Lord Commander of the King's Guard), and Egg is his squire, Prince Aegon (who becomes King Aegon  V Targaryen - he is also the brother of Maester Aemon). Three Dunk and Egg novellas have been published so far, and they are all being compiled together in this fancy new book. Here is the email; I apologize if the formatting gets wonky.

Reminder

Just so everybody is on the same page: the book club meeting has moved to Friday October 16 (Christian and/or Candie are next up for food), and the movie is at 5 pm this Friday. Bring $10.50 on Thursday if you would like me to pick up a ticket for you, and I'll leave them at the library for you Thursday night. I might be able to get there early Friday to grab some seats but I'm not sure yet. Get cracking on those books so we're all ready to meet in two weeks!

Buendía Family Tree

If you are struggling to keep the characters apart, I find it helps me to recreate the family tree on a 3x5 and use that as a bookmark. Then you don't have to keep flipping to the beginning, and you can write notes or cross out names as characters die.

Also, I found this amazing illustrated family tree of the Buendías.

Since most of us have not finished the book yet, and since the 8:30 movie keeps us out so late, I would like to propose moving the meeting ahead two weeks to Friday October 16, and switching our movie showtime to 5:30 this Friday October 2. The Martian - October 2

Hi readers!
The Martian is playing at the Village Theater at 8:30 pm Friday October 2, the day of our book club. Candie and I were toying with the idea of us all going as a group after book club is finished. The movie is 2 hours and 20 minutes long, so we would probably be at the theater until close to 11. Would you interested in going? Take my cool poll and let me know!

Thirty-First Meeting (8/14)

Hi everyone, thanks for coming to the meeting! Thank you David for the Greek food, and thanks Jacqueline for the madeleines!
I didn't take any notes tonight... but here's some of what I can remember us talking about:

• The book would have been cheapened if Mark had a wife or kids on Earth. Instead, he was surviving purely for his own survival. Not for anyone else's benefit.
• Mark is probably the only one of the six crew mates who could have survived alone on Mars.
• Basically we all agreed that Mark is awesome and the book was a lot of fun.
• If you can remember anything else, leave a comment!

Since we're not meeting for another seven weeks, we're reading two books: 100 Years of Solitude and The Little Prince. The meeting is tentatively scheduled for Friday October 2.

We forgot to talk about food, but I think either Christian or Candie is next on the list. But there's plenty of time to figure it out!
