Jacqueline was confused about the long list of Targaryen history on page 104 (when Lord Commander Mormont is explaining it to Jon Snow) so I made a family tree. Click here! I cut Aegon V's younger sisters and some of his descendents out to make it less overwhelming. So if you want to go back to page 104, this family tree should help.
Here's some of what we talked about tonight:
- Religion and the role that it plays. There are 3 religions that we know of right now. There are the Old Gods (people pray to them in a Godswood), the New Gods (the Seven, who are prayed to in a Sept), and the Lord of Light (R'hllor, prayed to by the Red Priests and their followers). [The Lord of Light is not the same as the "God of Death" that Syrio mentions in the TV show. He doesn't mention a God of Death in the books, it's just a quote from the show. Don't get confused. :) ]
- Stannis: is he likable or not? Everything is black and white with him. He is like an extreme version of Ned.
- Cersei is raising her children as Lannisters, not Baratheons. Tommen shouts "Casterly Rock" when he jousts with the straw opponent, and they always wear crimson. Joffrey took for his standard a lion combatant with a stag, instead of just Robert's stag as he should have.
- The Hound is Sansa's only protector. He supports her BS that killing someone on your name day is bad luck.
- Is Nymeria still alive? It is said that a fearsome she-wolf is leading packs of wolves in the Riverlands. And when a wolf pack finds Arya alone in the wolves, they back off instead of attacking her. It is possible that Arya still has some connection with a wild Nymeria.
- Sansa is slowly becoming less annoying. She finally hates Joffrey, at least.
- Tyrion is what King's Landing needs, yet almost everyone hates him. Tyrion and Cersei are both afraid of Tywin, so while Tyrion and Cersei are basically running the kingdom between the two of them, Tywin is the one who is actually ruling.
- How did Melisandre survive after drinking poison? Magic? The ruby at her throat glowed when she drank it. Immunity? The poison originated from the same place Melisandre comes from, and maybe she is used to being exposed to it.
- Davos is very likable. He is honest, practical, and straightforward. He seems to be beneficial to Stannis because he is so straightforward. Melisandre is the opposite - very spiritual and vague. Does Stannis listen to Melisandre because he is so desperate to be king, or because he has no other options? Melisandre is the only one who encourages him and has faith in his claim to the throne. His other supporters realistically question his likelihood of success.
- As readers we like Robb's peace terms, but Cersei won't. Catelyn wants Sansa and Arya back, but Robb knows that is not strategically wise. Catelyn thinks Robb needs her advice, but Robb listens to his War Council instead.
- Catelyn was supposed to go to Winterfell to look after her youngest sons. Instead she went east to take Tyrion to her sister, and then west to be with her dying father. Then, instead of remaining with her father or going north, she decides to go south to treat with Renly for Robb's cause. Robb has become her main focus.
- Cersei brags to Tyrion about all of her scheming, and is proud of herself. Cersei, while being honest with Tyrion, denies knowledge of Jon Arryn's murder. Tyrion wonders why Lysa Arryn blamed him, and Cersei says Ned had accused her.
- Ned was supposed to take the Black, and everything was arranged. Janos Slynt and Ilyn Payne were the only ones not surprised when Joffrey took Ned's head instead. Does this imply that Slynt put the idea into Joffrey's head, against the wishes of the entire Small Council?
- Harrenhal is supposedly cursed. It is also said that Harren cut down Weirwoods for timber to build Harrenhal.
