- Has Cersei always been crazy and paranoid, and we are just now seeing it now that we have her point of view? Or is she becoming crazy due to the events of the last book (Joffrey's and her father's deaths)?
- She is becoming more and more paranoid, believing that no one is helping her and that everyone is traitorous. She ironically puts her trust into people who are untrustworthy (the Kettleblacks and Lady Merryweather, for example). She thinks certain characters are power players (Mace Tyrell) and underestimates the actual players (Lady Olenna Tyrell).
- Varys was Rugen, the gaoler for the black cells in whose chambers ex-Maester Qyburn found the ancient Highgarden coin. We agreed that this was left behind purposefully, to sow discord between the Lannisters and the Tyrells.
- Prince Oberyn wanted Gregor Clegane to die as slowly and painfully as possible, as payback for Princess Elia's rape and murder and the murder of her children.
- Prince Doran is not as hot-blooded as Oberyn, but Doran's daughter Arianne seems more like Oberyn personality-wise.
- Sansa is starting to learn, finally. She is learning the value and use of lies. She has no protectors or confidantes anymore, just Petyr.
- Petyr is grooming her by sharing his plots and plans, and by giving her tips on how to manipulate others.
- What will Brienne do with Sansa if she finds her? Maybe take her to her father in Tarth.
- Would Sansa go with Brienne or would she want to stay with Petyr?
- Maybe Sansa will become more like Margaery (cunning and coy) after spending time with and learning from Petyr.
- We learned about the gods of the Iron Islands. The Drowned God is the god who is worshiped, and his eternal enemy is the Storm God.
- We speculated that maybe Euron is worshiping the Storm God, and this caused King Balon to be swept off of a bridge during a storm. To Aeron Damphair, worshiping the Storm God would be worse than being godless.
- We think it is significant that the Stark house sword is in the hands of both Brienne and King Tommen.
- We discussed the definition of magic. Are dragons and the Others magical creatures or are they just creatures (such as dinosaurs) that are rare and/or extinct?
- We talked again about which came first - dragons or magic? The Others appeared before the dragons, in the prologue of the first book. So perhaps the Others brought magic. Or maybe it was just the oncoming long winter that brought the Others farther south.
- Book One is book-ended by ice and fire!! (Others in the prologue, dragons in the last chapter) Remember that this whole series is called A Song of Ice and Fire :)
- Sansa needs protection and so she stays with Petyr because she has no family or friends to run to. Arya is able to protect herself and goes by herself to an entirely different continent.
- Podrick and Brienne are both extremely loyal. Brienne can whip him into shape and mentor him into becoming a great man.
- Princess Arianne is manipulating Ser Arys Oakheart. Is she really in love with him or is she just using him to put Myrcella on the throne and to protect her own inheritance in Dorne?
- Candie noticed a trend in the chapter titles: The titles that have a description instead of a name describe what that character believes themselves to be at that point in time. For example, The Spoiled Knight is Arys after he has forsaken his vows. Sansa chapters become Alayne chapters when she starts to believe her own lies.
As always, if there's anything I forgot to mention, or if you want to add something or ask a question, post it in the comments!
